Child Abuse Interdisciplinary Team

Children in our community are abused every day. The Child Abuse Interdisciplinary Team (CAIT) is a multidisciplinary team of professionals who work together to investigate cases where child sexual abuse or serious physical abuse is alleged or suspected. By working collaboratively, the team is able to coordinate the efforts of all the professionals involved in the investigation process and provide appropriate services to the child and their family.

The people we serve:

  • Any child under the age of 18 who is suspected of being a victim of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, severe neglect, domestic violence or death due to abuse or neglect.
  • Their parents
  • Their siblings

How the program works:

  • Referrals are made by the Department of Children and Families, law enforcement, State’s Attorney’s Office, and the community at large.
  • Child victim interviews are conducted by a specially trained mental health professional to ensure the child and his/her family receive prompt and ongoing treatment that is tailored to their specific needs and family situations.
  • The investigation process is coordinated and streamlined by professionals from local police departments, Department of Children and Families, adult and juvenile courts, medical and mental health fields.
  • Allegations of abuse are more completely investigated and more likely to result in successful prosecution.

The CAIT Program at the Child Guidance Clinic of Greater Waterbury is accredited and partially funded by the National Children’s Alliance.
